Victorian Feed-In Tariff Schemes

Posted on: 2013-01-12

Feed-in tariffs provide people producing their own renewable energy with a financial return for the excess power they feed into the grid.

Up until now, different rates were available for different renewable energy technologies and different sized systems. This is being streamlined to one rate, based on the adjusted wholesale price for electricity. The minimum rate will be 8 cents per kilowatt hour for 2013 and will be reviewed annually by the regulator until 2016.

The new Feed-in Tariff is available to households, community organisations and businesses who install sustainable energy systems no greater than 100 kilowatts in size.

From mid-2013, some additional low-emissions technologies will also be made eligible. To be updated on changes to Victoria’s feed-in tariffs you can subscribe to our e-Updates.

If you already have a feed-in tariff being credited to your power bill, you will continue to receive this rate until the end date for your scheme. Conditions apply, and you should read more about remaining eligible for your scheme on this website.

Customers accessing the Transitional Feed-in Tariff and the Premium Feed-in Tariff are reminded that any additional panels added to their systems after 31 December 2012 will forfeit their access to the scheme.

The Creation

When God had made the earth and sky
the flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals
the fish, the birds and bees.
And when at last He'd finished
not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this world of mine
and give each one a name."
And so He traveled far and wide
and everywhere He went,
a little creature followed Him
until it's strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth
and in the sky and sea,
the little creature said, "Dear Lord,
there's not one left for me."
Kindly the Father said to him,
"I've left you to the end.
I've turned my own name back to front
and called you dog, My friend."

Solar Power

Posted on: 2012-02-19

I have been toying with the idea of turning 'green' and getting solar installed on my roof for all my power needs and any left over can go back into the grid.

I've been toying far too long ... I missed the 66 cent rebate which went down to a tiny 25 cent rebate, so I need to get a wriggle on but ... huge BUT!

So many options on every single aspect of going 'sun power'. Inverters; a wazillion choice, Panels; a further bazillion choices and it goes on.

About the only thing I can say do your research before you sign up for anything.

The little I have found out:

  • Make sure the company you are dealing with will be around beyond just the 'boom'. If you have to claim on warrenty, will the company still be here to honour it?
  • If you think you can expand later, think again. You need the same type of panel to add to an exisiting system unless you were clever enough to buy an inverters with MPPT (maximum power point tracking).
  • If the deal sounds like it's too good to be true then it's highly likely that it is. Look closely before you sign up. This brings me to this clip from Today Tonight.
